Workshops
Flute Quest 2010 provides a variety of free and ticketed workshops for young and old alike. The weekend is filled with a variety of classes for groups and individual needs.
We will be offering a FREE beginners flute playing workshop again this year, and you will have the opportunity to signup ahead. See the schedule below.
Flute Quest will feature workshops in a variety of areas of interest, such as flute playing for the beginner to advanced player. We are pleased to announce we will also have PVC flutes in the Key of "A" available for $25.00 at all the beginning flute playing workshops, and from the Flute Quest Information Booth. Space is limited, so If there are still seats available for a workshop after pre-sales stop, you may put your name on a sign-up sheet at the Flute Quest booth, and make payment in cash to the instructor beginning 1/2 hour prior to the start of the workshop. Example: Workshop start time: 10:00 AM, sign-up ahead at flute quest booth, depending on availability, arrive at 9:30 AM to pay instructor, and attend class.
It will be important to plan ahead for parking at Saltwater State Park, and to obtain directions to the workshop locations.

Didgeridoo Basics Pam Mortensen $35.00
This fun and informative class will cover some of the basics of didgeridoo playing including getting the drone (the basic sound of the didgeridoo), clarifying the drone to make different tones, vocalizing through the didgeridoo, circular breathing and making simple rhythms and more. If you do not have a didgeridoo, no worries, there will be extras available for participants to use.

Performance Readiness Mary Youngblood $35.00
Are you already performing for live audiences, schools, Churches or in your community? Are you feeling ready for the stage, a recording, or gaining the confidence needed to play in front of people? Do you have questions about recording, PA equipment, microphones and/or the performance world in general? This workshop is where you want to be. Come find out how to further your wonderful Native American flute journey. Mary will also focus on confidence building. Class Limit: 20

Paint & Decorate a PVC Flute Kelly Morrison $40.00
Take your PVC flute from white to WOW! You will easily create a one of a kind flute, using acrylic paints and markers. Make it colorful, include images that have meaning to you; keep it simple or go for detail. Don't worry, no artistic ability is required. You can't get it wrong! As well as coaching and support, Kelly will provide examples and patterns to make the process fun and easy. Bring your own PVC Flute, or you may buy one for an additional $20 at the workshop. Class limit: 15. Ages 16 +

Drum Making with Soaring Eagle Woman Bonnie Pemberton $195.00
Come join me as you make your own 15' elk drum. Learn the story of your drum, you will be told stories and learn songs as you create your Medicine drum. We will call in the directions and ask for guidance as we do this powerful work. Bring water and a snack. Please dress casual as you may get your clothes wet. Cost: $195, Class Size: 5

Friday: Make a Fancy Leather Flute Bag Randal Veenker $80.00
Have you ever wanted to make your own leather flute bag for your favorite flute? Here is your chance. You will be provided all the materials and instruction needed to make a fancy fringed deer hide leather flute bag with a shoulder strap. You will be decorating the flute bag with four seed bead 1 1/2 inch rosettes with horse hair tassel accents and the strap is decorated with a 25 inch seed bead strip. The seed bead rosettes and strip are pre-made, every thing else you will be assembling. Bring the flute you wish to make the bag for or know the dimensions of the flute including the length of the flute and total width at the block. If you have a special item(s) you want to add to your flute bag project, be sure to bring it along. Class Limit: 5

Getting the most out of your Anasazi Flute Scott August $35.00
Learn the secrets of this mysterious ancient flute from renowned master Scott August. Do you want to learn about an Anasazi Flute, how to play and how to get the most out the instrument? In this workshop you will learn how to hold the flute, explore lip position called "embouchure", getting your first notes, perfecting your tone, exploring the scales, breath control and how to practice. Whether you just got your Anasazi flute, or can already get tones out of it, this workshop will get you on your path to playing on this haunting instrument like a pro. Class Limit: 20

Embellishments & Techniques Mary Youngblood $35.00
Mary discusses her techniques in using visualization, to assist the more advanced player in obtaining their musical goals. She teaches that even embellishments have embellishments- Mary will share advanced details of these special embellishments such as breath control, vibrato, bending the notes, and "the bark". Students will have the unique opportunity to "pick Mary's brain" about how to further advance their own flute journey. Class Limit: 20

Drone Flute Making Tom Stewart $200.00
You will be making your own drone flute from a pre-tuned drone flute kit. Advanced techniques include discussions of voicing, balancing, and tuning a drone-style flute. Meet with Tom on Saturday morning to get project details and timing of the tasks; it will be possible to attend other Flute Quest events, as breaks are needed for glues and paints to dry, etc., so you can configure your flute building time to fit other activities, too. This is a 2-day intensive workshop where you will be able to work on the flutes during the hours Sat 9:00a - 5:00p & Sun 9:00a - 3:00p. You may not be completing the flute during the festival, as you will want time to wonder around the festival, plan ahead accordingly. Class Limit: 7

Join recording artist Joe Young for a workshop on connecting to your personal inspiration with the native Flute. All skill levels of flute players are welcome. Joe Young will guide the class on a journey of personal inspiration to help everyone learn how to make a connection to yourself and your music. Lori Boess Drum Making Lori Boess $195.00
Come make your own drum in ceremony with gifted artist Lori Boess of Medicine Dog Drum. We will spend 4-6 hours in community building a 15" Elk hide frame drum, including the drum stick. The drum is the one instrument that crosses all cultures. If you are feeling drawn to reconnect with an ancient rhythm this class is for you. Drums have been used over the centuries for remembering our connection to the Earth, dancing, celebration and calling forth life from the seedlings. What are you called to give birth to? Beginners' Flute Making Class Theory Vance Pennington $35.00
This class is vital for aspiring flute makers and flute players. Learn the aspects and 'secrets' behind making a Native American flute, to 'Concert' standard using a simple and inexpensive computer program. This class will explain how to solve problems and much more! Being a very informal class, I will be more than happy to answer questions at any time during the time we have. Even though flute making may just be a hobby, learn how to create an instrument that is as good as any knowledgeable professional flute maker. And, for flute players, this is an ideal opportunity to learn some of the important factors of the Native American flute that will help you with future purchases and playing. Class Limit: 20

Improvising & Songwriting I Scott August $35.00
Do you sometimes feel stuck in your flute playing? Do you feel you hit a plateau? Multi-award winning artist Scott August will help you on your way to discovering the songs inside of you. You'll learn tips and trips to turn even the simplest ideas into complete songs or improvisations. Investigate advanced ornamentations, trills, turns and tremolos, tonguing effects, and advanced improvising techniques. Class Limit: 20

Beading with a Loom Marby Pennington $70.00
Marby, a Master Beader, will be teaching all of those tricks about beading that you won't learn in a book, or, for that matter, in most beading classes. You will receive all of the beads necessary to make a flute wrap or bracelet, a custom ergonomic loom, engineered by her husband Vance to alleviate neck strain, and printed instructions. Students will learn the basics of loom work including threading the loom and following a pattern to create your project. The project will not be finished during the class time but detailed instructions on how to finish will be provided. Once you have your own loom, you can create all kinds of different items! Come, join Marby and share in the fun of creating your own colorful bead work! Class Limit: 12

Learning to Play Duets Stephanie Baldridge $35.00
You will learn how to do many different styles of duets, including information in blending, playing in 5ths and 3rds, entrainment, and how to be successful at duets and or ensemble playing. The "Flute circle song", by Ward Stroud, and using the "Cherokee morning song", as a round will also be covered. Excellent for livening up flute circles! Handouts will be provided. A section on "duetiquette" will also be included. No experience required. Class Limit: 18

Ever felt like you've exhausted the limits of your artistic expression as a Native American flutist? Ever thought of teaming your flute with other types of instruments? Would you like perform with other musicians but wondered how, and even if, it would work? Then join us to "think outside of the flute box!" Learn and explore the ways the Native American flute can effectively blend with a variety of other instruments by applying a well-defined and methodical approach to various scales and chord schemes. And if you're not a "dyed in the wool" purist, we may even delve a bit into the use of the Native American flute in a variety of musical genres. We may also try some composing. Who knows? Music & Healing Mary Youngblood & Stephen Branco $35.00
Along with her life partner, Steve Branco, MA (Expressive Arts Therapist) Mary will facilitate a journey into the importance, relevance and application, of music and the arts- as they pertain to healing.- In such challenging times, we often find ourselves searching for, and wishing to maintain what brings ourselves, our families and our communities- peace, contentment and healing into our lives. Students will further discover their own potential for using the Native American flute in healing in their own personal, and/or professional lives. Mary and Steve will lead attendees through a series of creative and fun exercises that will motivate and encourage flute players who wish to explore their own natural healing abilities. In this class you will learn the art of creating beautiful beaded work without using a loom. Learn one of the most versatile stitches in beading plus the answers to lots of questions. Appreciation Party - Thursday August 19th 7-9 PM
Saltwater State Park under the Festival Tent
You are invited to attend our Appreciation Party at Flute Quest.
This will be for everyone who is involved in Flute Quest either as a volunteer, vendor, entertainer, or instructor. We want you to join us in a party to celebrate the 5th annual Flute Quest.
We hope you will all attend and bring your appetites and excitement to meet everyone who will be involved with Flute Quest in some way.
Please bring lawn chairs and meet us under the festival tent at Saltwater State Park for the PARTY!
